Abyssinian Banana – Ensete Ventricosum

The Abyssinian Banana is also known as the Ethiopian Banana or false banana. It has large leaves with a bright red central vein making a stunning feature in any tropical garden. In native habitat it is grown for its edible rhizomes underground. Choose a warm sunny spot, sheltered from the winds, to minimise any leaf damage. Don’t allow the surrounding soil to dry out. It is a heavy nitrogen feeder so supplement well in spring and summer. It will grow to 3 -4 meters in height so allow plenty of space for this feature plant.
