Alcantares Rubra is a large Bromeliad growing to 1.5 meters wide and up to 4 meters high with the flower spike. It is a stunning plant that originates from Brazil, with the leaves developing a deep burgundy colour in direct sunlight. A excellent addition to the tropical garden. It may be pot grown, even indoors, but will often outgrow an indoor location. Leaves are coloured green when young but develop the maroon colour with age and sunlight. A warm humid location is recommended with protection from frosts. Filling the leaf vase with water during summer will maintain it on hot days. Use a slow-release fertilizer annually.
