Pandanus Red Edge – Common Screw Pine – Pandanus Utilis

Pandanus Utilis – the Common Screw Pine is a native of Madagascar and despite its name is not a pine at all. It has stunning red-edged foliage and exhibits a spiral growth habit. The leaf edges are sharp – so best not planted adjacent to walkways when young. As it grows the stilt roots develop and it makes a stunning specimen tree in the tropical landscape. Utilis will grow to 3 to 5 meters with a spread of 3 meters. It does best in a full sun situation but will tolerate part shade. Again take care to ensure a well-drained planting bed is prepared.
