Shell Ginger ‘Variegata’ – Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’

The Variegated Shell Ginger to native to East Asia and its stripey green leaves make an excellent addition to the tropical garden. It grows to 1.5 meters and is an excellent back infill or understorey plant for the tropical landscape. It is quite cold tolerant but frost sensitive and does best in dappled shade in temperate areas. A moist well-drained soil rich in mulch and peat moss is ideal. It produces attractive pale-pink flower bracts in spring with attractive shell-like pendulums. An organic liquid fertilizer is recommended monthly throughout the growing season.
