Mulanje Cycad (Encephalartos Gratus)
The Mulanje Cycad is a native of Malawi and Mozambique. As it grows the fronds may reach up to 2 metres in length. For best effect it needs protection from full sun but is a very hardy cycad showing vigorous growth. It is also a fast-growing cycad with shiny leaves that produce a shaded canopy. A good draining soil is essential for best results. The Mulanje cycad is not common in cultivation and is a collector’s plant. As it grows the trunk becomes quite large and it a feature plant in any tropical landscape.
