Spindle Palm – Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii
The Spindle Palm is an endangered species originating from Rodrigues island, Mauritius. It has a swollen thick trunk – much like a spindle, with sturdy, yellow-stemmed leaves. They will grow in partial shade to full sun but are frost sensitive. It is a slow grower but well worth the wait as the mature form develops. It can be container grown or rather best as a feature plant in the tropical landscape. Mature height is 5 – 6 meters and it’s fairly cold tolerant compared to its cousin the Bottle Palm. Watch for spots on the leaves which may indicate potassium deficiency.
