Tumeric – Curcuma Longa
Tumeric grows best in part shade, ideally no more than six hours of direct sunlight otherwise leaf wilting may occur due to dryness. It is a sub-tropical plant that will grow in temperate regions, but die down in winter and re-emerge during spring. It likes a compost rich soil with plenty of mulch as with most gingers. It is easily propagated by digging up and dividing the rhizomes when the plant goes into dormancy – for planting next spring. It produces tall attractive flower spikes to add to the tropical garden. In natural habitat it receives 1 – 2 meters of rain annually so keep well-watered.
